“God, I don’t know how you can use me. The only thing I know how to do well is I know how to love people unconditionally and I’m really good at fitting people with glasses.” When she prayed that prayer, optician Amy Schneider was on medical leave, just trying to get her body “back in working order.” What she didn’t know was her insurance-agent husband was also praying . . . something she only learned when Jim woke her out of a deep sleep to exclaim “Amy, I’ve got an amazing idea to start an eyewear company that honors God!”
At first Amy thought Jim was crazy, but later that week they were at a major eyewear show. “We spent three days shopping and looking at thousands of brands of eyewear,” Jim says, “and found that nothing tastefully communicated faith.” (Jim notes that “tasteful” is an important part of their company vision. “We want to be on your face but not in your face.”) Over those three days a passion—and a company—was born. Although they offer a variety of attractive frames, Eyes of Faith is about more than just cute eyewear. For every Eyes of Faith frame sold, a complete pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses is donated to someone in need, spreading the love of Christ through the gift of sight.
Working with Sight Ministries, Eyes of Faith supports pastors and local churches around the world. Jim explains “as a way to get people to come to that church they offer free eye care exams.” Those who need correction are given free prescription glasses on the spot. Unlike programs that fit people with donated, used eyewear, Eyes of Faith recipients get to choose from several different frames in three different colors. “I’ve been to Kenya twice,” Jim laughs, “it seems like everybody there — men and women — chooses pink.” The chosen frames are custom-fitted with lenses that match the patient’s prescription, giving them the best possible vision. “A lot of times,” Jim says, “we’re giving two pairs of glasses away for that person over 40 who needs them both for distance and up close work. It helps them be able to read their Bible, it can help them do intricate work . . . a simple pair of reading glasses can really change a life.” Those who don’t need corrective lenses are given sunglasses to help keep their eyes healthy.
“Sometimes as believers,” Amy shares, “one of the hardest things to do is spark that first conversation to be able to share your faith with somebody that you know doesn’t know the Lord.” Eyes of Faith has just introduced the Women of Faith Collection, designer eyewear that, Amy says, “gives women of faith the opportunity to share their faith in a fun new way.” The Women of Faith Collection currently features reading glasses, with prescription eyewear now in development. “When you need to wear glasses, why not wear and share? Why not buy a pair and give a pair to somebody in need in the process?” You can find the Women of Faith Collection on the Eyes of Faith website and in retail outlets. Tell your eye doctor about Eyes of Faith — it might open the door to share your faith and introduce someone to Jesus.
