By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my seventy-third year of walking, running, biking, and sometimes skating around on this earth. I can’t say I’ve enjoyed every minute of it—there have been moments that left me sobered and uncertain. But Jesus tells me in John 16:33 not to be surprised. “In the world you will have tribulation.” This knowledge reminds me to sometimes lower my expectations for a perfect life on this planet. Perfection comes later. It’s found only in heaven.
However, there is much that gives me pleasure while I continue to dash about in anticipation of total perfection. I love what I call ‘human kinship.’ It’s that sometimes hard-to-explain feeling I get when someone’s example inspires me to rise to my best self (the self that chooses not to quit or make excuses), or break out of an old mold and not always go with the flow.
