Love Is Active
Introduction:
Here is a commandment from Jesus that we get in the book of John- “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12-13, New International Version). Let’s reflect on this commandment by looking at how Jesus loved.
- The love of Jesus was active:
Love is what drove Jesus to eat with those that were deemed “unclean”, to invite a tax collector to be his disciple, to generously feed 5000 that were hungry, to give healing touch to lepers. Ultimately, love is why Jesus hung on the cross and laid down his life. The way he loved was not passive or reserved- it was proactive and intentional- a core to his identity and how he spent his time.
- The love of Jesus was compassionate:
We see many instances of Jesus taking a dedicated portion of his day to respond to the needs of the suffering. He was an extraordinary listener. Regardless of whether it was a disciple or an enemy, Jesus valued listening to them, and he responded thoughtfully and patiently. He was also an encourager of others. And what was he encouraging people towards- love. The Beatitudes in Matthew and Luke call the listeners into loving God and love towards others. This was a theme Jesus advocated throughout his life. While He is the King of Kings, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45, New International Version).
- Questions for consideration:
What does laying down your life as an expression of love look like? Is there a specific area or thing that you feel is being challenged to put God’s love into action? How do you engage the Holy Spirit to help you in this work?
Heavenly Father, help us to live and to love as your Son, Jesus, did. Help us during this Lent season to be active listeners that listen for your calling in our life- a calling to love you and all others around us that you have brought us into connection with. Help our prayer today to be: More of you, Jesus, and less of me, until it is Christ alone in my life. We pray this in the name of Jesus, amen and let it be.
