PARTNERING WITH GOD
The love of God is the key to trusting Him enough to let Him “do it.” Do what? Absolutely everything!
I’m in periodic correspondence with a woman who secretly struggles with alcoholism. She is a pastor’s wife in a relatively small community. One of her greatest fears is being “found out.” She knows all the scriptures, and she knows God has not disowned her. But the grip of alcohol continues its hold upon her.
How would this woman let God “do it” for her? Would she just choose to head for a hammock and substitute Milk Duds for a bottle?
Letting God “do it” is not passive action. We partner with him. He has the power; we do not. We recognize His power, and in our powerlessness we pray, “Jesus, help me!”
That he will help us is a given.
What is the pastor’s wife’s responsibility in letting God “do it”? She needs to choose to trust Him. She also needs to admit her powerlessness. Oddly enough, she thinks it’s only a matter of time before she’s able to “conquer” her vice. She’s working on increasing her discipline. She’s also tripping over her graveclothes.
He didn’t call her to rule keeping, even about something as destructive as alcoholism. He called her from death to life. He called her to a partnership of trust. In that partnership, she can experience the power to overcome. Philippians 4:13 states, “I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need.”
So can you. So can I. that’s the role we play. It’s not the major role. God plays the major role while we rest in who He is and what He has done and in the knowledge that we were, are, and will always be the focus of His love.
