Based on a true story.  Growing up in small-town Texas in the early 1960s through a childhood marked by challenges, young Rickey Hill knew two things: he loved the Lord, and he loved baseball. But Rickey’s preacher father, James Hill (Golden Globe nominee DENNIS QUAID), believes his son has enough hardships in life without sports and hopes his son will follow in his footsteps. Born with a degenerative spinal disease, Rickey’s legs are encased in supportive braces but his talent on the baseball diamond shows glory to a higher power. When Rickey (COLIN FORD) is invited to try out for a legendary major league scout, he and his family get a chance to fight for his dream.

James Hill (Quaid) struggles to accept his son’s desire to play baseball, fearing that the continued physical stress will only paralyze him further. That, coupled with his deep-rooted religious beliefs, causes James to miss his son’s games until he finally realizes that the miracles that brought Rickey to the mound should be celebrated, not feared.

James Hill’s mother-in-law (Bonnie Bedelia) gives an emotional performance as she tries to convince James to recognize her grandson’s talent and allow him to pursue his dreams. She, along with the whole ensemble cast, provide rousing moments of hope and determination that help the audience root for the film’s hero

The film dutifully re-creates the early 1960s, from the costumes and hair & make-up to the production design. The movie’s cinematography also conjures a familiar nostalgia for a time period where things seemed simpler, but weren’t without their own complications and setbacks.

Based on a true story, THE HILL also stars SCOTT GLENN, JOELLE CARTER, and Golden Globe nominee BONNIE BEDELIA

THE HILL releases in theaters on Friday, August 25th, 2023
