Surround Yourself with the Right People

Good company creates good morals.

Surrounding yourself with the right people is essential for spiritual growth, emotional health, and overall well-being. In the Bible, we are consistently encouraged to choose our companions wisely because they influence our thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes.

Proverbs 13:20 says, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." This verse highlights the power of influence that others have over us. If we surround ourselves with wise, godly people, we will be uplifted and encouraged to make wise choices. However, if we associate with those who are foolish or who lead us astray, we risk being pulled into negative patterns.

In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul warns, “Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" The people we spend time with have the power to shape our attitudes, values, and actions. Being in the right company can help us remain strong in our faith, overcome challenges, and stay focused on God’s purposes for our lives.

Jesus Himself exemplified the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people. He had a close circle of disciples who encouraged one another and supported His mission. Mark 3:14 says, “He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach.” The companionship of these disciples played a key role in Jesus’ ministry and His work on earth.

Also, in Hebrews 10:24-25, we are reminded of the importance of community: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Encouraging each other and gathering together strengthens our faith, helps us persevere through difficulties, and provides a support system for spiritual growth.

God’s heart on surrounding yourself with the right people is clear: He wants us to be in relationships that build us up, encourage us, and hold us accountable. People who love the Lord, who walk in His truth, and who support our spiritual journey can help us live in a way that honors God. Be intentional about the people you allow to influence your life—choose those who inspire, challenge, and help you grow in faith.

As Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Surround yourself with people who challenge you to grow, who help you become more like Christ, and who will hold you accountable as you walk out your faith.

Be open and curious when talking to new people.
Ask deeper questions to see if your values align.

Be Authentic

Don’t mold yourself to fit in—your people will appreciate you for who you are.
Share your quirks, passions, and thoughts without fear.

Stay Open & Give It Time

It might take a while to find the right group.
Not every connection will be deep, but some will be unexpectedly meaningful.

The Bible teaches that the people we surround ourselves with can either build us up or tear us down, and God desires that we choose relationships that align with His will and purpose for our lives.

The Importance of Wise Counsel

God encourages us to seek wise counsel and surround ourselves with people who will lead us in the right direction. Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” Choosing friends and mentors who are rooted in God’s wisdom helps us make decisions that honor Him and lead to peace and success. Wise counsel is a gift from God, as it guides us toward His plans and helps us avoid the pitfalls of foolishness.

Iron Sharpens Iron

God’s Word emphasizes the power of strong, godly relationships to encourage and sharpen one another in faith. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” God desires for us to surround ourselves with people who challenge us, hold us accountable, and help us grow spiritually. A community of believers who support one another in love and truth is a powerful force for building faith and advancing God’s kingdom.

The Impact of Bad Company

In contrast to the value of godly friendships, Scripture warns about the dangers of being influenced by those who lead us away from God. 1 Corinthians 15:33 reminds us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” God’s heart is that we protect our hearts and minds by being discerning about the people we allow to influence us. God wants us to cultivate relationships that are built on love, mutual respect, and encouragement. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 encourages us, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Surrounding ourselves with people who encourage us in our walk with God helps us remain steadfast, especially in times of difficulty or temptation. In return, we are called to be a source of encouragement to others.

The Role of Godly Friends in Our Spiritual Growth

God uses relationships to help us grow and develop in our faith. In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, it says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” We were not meant to walk alone. God places people in our lives to support us, help us stay on track, and remind us of His promises when we struggle.

Jesus’ Example of Relationships

Jesus Himself surrounded Himself with a close group of disciples who would support His mission and carry on His work after His death and resurrection. Ultimately, God’s heart for us is to surround ourselves with people who love Him and love others. In John 13:34-35, Jesus gives a new commandment: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Healthy relationships marked by love, humility, and service reflect God’s heart and point others to Christ.

God’s heart on surrounding yourself with the right people is rooted in the wisdom of seeking godly influences and avoiding those that lead us astray. He desires for us to have relationships that sharpen, encourage, and strengthen us in our walk with Him. By choosing relationships that reflect His love and truth, we can experience spiritual growth, peace, and a stronger connection to His purpose for our lives.
