Burden of Striving

I need to admit something to you. I never really understood what this scripture really meant.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
I naturally strive, work hard, and make it happen all by myself. I always thought it was an excellent attribute to simply “put my head down” and work hard. I thought my good work ethic and striving to pursue the next venture depended on my hard work.
Over the years, I have learned striving continually wore me down. Being weary and feeling burdened wasn’t of the LORD. This weight I placed on my own shoulders actually held me back from what God had for my life. I wasn’t giving my burdens to God and wasn’t letting Him lead the way.
Mind-blowing, right!?!
So here is what changed everything for me.
The next time you feel weary or burdened, first of all, read Matthew 11:28-30 again.
Now, visualize this. When a team of oxen pulls a plow, an older, more stable ox will be matched with a younger, inexperienced ox. The more experienced ox is given a close-fitting yoke, while the younger ox is given a loose-fitting yoke. This is designed to prevent the younger ox from feeling the burden of the yoke. The younger ox is learning what it is to walk alongside a wise, old ox as they pull the plow together.
Just like the younger ox, we are ALWAYS the ones learning what it is to walk alongside our wise Counselor. A yoke is restrictive, yet God wants to teach us to walk alongside Him.
If you can feel the burdens in your life, you are in the lead, not God.
We are not to be in front of Him, striving all along the way. This is what I had to understand!
Doesn’t it sound so much easier to just follow along with Him instead of pushing your way forward!?!
“Cast your burden upon the LORD, and He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.” Psalm 55:22
And finally, simply stop striving, lay down your burdens at the feet of Jesus, and follow God. Find rest for your soul because God’s yoke is easy, and His burden is light.
