How Thinking Younger Can Transform Your Life

I recently experienced a significant mindset shift that has profoundly impacted my outlook on aging. It all started when I stumbled upon a fascinating Harvard study (find it here) involving men in their 70s. This study, which lasted only five days, asked these men to act as if they were 22 years younger.

Before the experiment began, the researchers conducted extensive cognitive and physical tests, measuring everything from strength to the length of their fingers. The men were then immersed in an environment filled with reminders of their lives 22 years earlier, from music to images and more. For the next five days, they fully embraced this younger mindset.

The results were astounding! Men who had been using canes were suddenly playing flag football and engaging in various physical activities. At the end of the study, the researchers found that not only had their physical abilities improved, but even the length of their fingers had increased. It was a powerful demonstration of the mind-body connection and the impact of mindset on our physical well-being.

This study resonated deeply with me, especially from a spiritual perspective. We often talk about renewing and transforming our minds (Romans 12:2), and this is a tangible example of how powerful that can be. If we constantly tell ourselves we're old and frail, we will likely feel and act that way. But what if we decided to adopt a more youthful outlook?

I just turned 46, but I've decided to live like I’m 35. Not in terms of maturity or my spiritual journey but in terms of energy and physical vitality. I wake up every morning and declare, "I’m 35, and I’m going to have an amazing day!" The change in my mindset has been remarkable. Recently, a friend even commented that I seemed taller. I joked that it was because I'm 35 now, but there was truth in her observation—I feel more vibrant and alive.

This experience has inspired me to encourage others to choose an age when they feel their best and live with that mindset. I'm not recommending that you deny reality or ignore physical ailments, but instead, embrace a spirit of youthfulness and vitality.

So, what age do you want to be? Think back to a time when you felt genuinely vibrant and healthy. Start your day by declaring the spirit of that age and see how it transforms your life. Share your chosen age in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories!

And a shout out to those who understand the science behind this—yes, it’s neuroplasticity at work! Our brains are capable of amazing things when we harness the power of God at work in our minds, positive thinking, and belief.

Let’s all aim to feel vibrant, energetic, and alive, no matter what our chronological age says.
