The Company We Keep: Navigating the Impact of Media on Our Faith Journey

Did you know everyday our brain processes about 70,000 thoughts? Throughout our life our experiences create patterns of activity that explain how our brains code our thoughts, memories, skills and sense of the world around us. 

In a world where screens dominate our daily existence, it is essential for us to explore the influence of media on our perspectives of reality and to reflect on the company we keep through the choices we make in what we watch and listen to.

A Reflection on Influence:

Media has the power to shape our thoughts, beliefs, and even our understanding of the world around us. It serves as a constant companion, influencing our attitudes, values, and ultimately, our perspectives of reality. As followers of Christ, it becomes imperative for us to assess the impact of the content we allow into our hearts and minds.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 4:23 (NIV), "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." This wisdom encourages us to be vigilant about the influences that shape our innermost being. In a world filled with various media choices, we must consciously choose content that aligns with the values and teachings of our faith.

The Power of Discernment:

In a society that bombards us with information, discernment becomes a precious skill. Philippians 4:8 (NIV) provides a guide: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Let us approach our media choices with this scriptural filter, ensuring that what we expose ourselves to reflects the light of God's truth.

Media Consumption and Spiritual Growth:

Our media choices can either hinder or enhance our spiritual growth. Psalm 101:3 (NIV) states, "I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it." As we engage with various forms of media, let us ask ourselves whether our choices align with our commitment to follow Jesus and live according to His teachings.

A Call to Intentionality:

Being intentional about our media consumption is a crucial aspect of our spiritual journey. Let us remember the words of Romans 12:2 (NIV): "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." By making intentional choices in what we watch and listen to, we participate in the renewing of our minds and the transformation of our hearts.

A Prayer for Discernment and Wisdom:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before you with humble hearts, seeking your guidance and wisdom as we navigate the complex landscape of media in our lives. Grant us discernment to recognize content that aligns with your truth and the strength to turn away from that which does not.

Help us, Lord, to be intentional about the company we keep through the media choices we make. May our hearts and minds be filled with thoughts that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable—according to your Word.

We pray for the grace to live out the teachings of Philippians 4:8 and Romans 12:2 in our daily lives, transforming our minds and hearts to be more like yours.

In the precious name of Jesus, we lift up this prayer. Amen.

May we continue to walk in the light of His truth, guarding our hearts and minds for His glory.
