Worship Through Your Hobbies
Sometimes my mind drifts to things I enjoy—whether it’s gardening, cooking, reading, vacationing, or just hanging out with friends.
I start to wonder, “Is this distracting me? Or does this hobby bring me closer to God and better equip me to fulfill the mission he has for me?”
We all have a specific calling in life, and we’re meant to serve the Lord in a unique way.
We’re also created to enjoy His creation and embrace the creativity He’s given us.
How can these two truths knit together? Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how our hobbies can actually be a form of worship. Have you ever thought about it that way?
For me, taking care of my flowers and working in the garden is more than just a hobby; it’s a way to connect with God. When I’m out there tending to my plants, I’m reminded of all the analogies in the Bible—like pruning.
Just this morning, I was out trimming my King Tut grass, which had grown so wild that people had to squeeze by it to get to my front door! As I was cutting back the old, overgrown pieces to make room for the new growth, I couldn’t help but think, “How often do we need to be pruned back in life so we can thrive and grow the way God wants us to?”
This little gardening session turned into a moment of reflection for me. It made me realize that hobbies don’t have to be just “me time.”
They can be a way to worship, a way to grow in our relationship with the Lord, or even a way to mirror the creativity of our Creator.
Here’s the key question: Are we worshiping the hobby itself, or are we worshiping through the hobby?
If we’re not careful, even a harmless hobby can turn into an idol, something that takes God’s place in our lives, or something that we prioritize over Him. But when we invite God into our hobbies, they become something beautiful and meaningful.
So, what about you? Do you have any hobbies that allow you to worship while you’re doing them? Whether it’s gardening, working out, writing, or spending time with friends, these activities can be powerful ways to glorify God.
And maybe, just maybe, there are some hobbies we need to let go of if they’re taking too much focus away from Him.
I’d love to hear—what hobby helps you connect with the Lord? Let’s share and encourage each other to worship in our quiet time but in the everyday things we love to do.
